The topic of leadership has been studied extensively by I/O psychologists; however, a disproportionate number of empirical studies have employed quantitative research methodologies. More recently, qualitative research methodologies are being increasingly utilized to examine a variety of leadership phenomena. This session will address the issues inherent in, and the benefits associated with, qualitative leadership research methodologies by addressing issues of the coding of qualitative data and reviewing the results of recent empirical investigations. In addition, empirical findings from recent studies of derailment, leader-member exchange, leading creative talent, and team engagement will be presented. A highly-respected senior leadership scholar will conclude with his perspectives on qualitative leadership research.
