Many speak of the importance of leaders striking balances — between the short-run and the long-haul, between taking charge and empowering, etc. Implicit is the idea that leadership effectiveness hinges on balance. We describe a unique way to assess how well managers balance competing values and demonstrate with data that balance is indeed essential to high performance.
