This chapter presents a historical look at the evolution of research on leadership styles. Changes in thinking about leadership are cast as a function of paradigm shifts in the larger system of social science and in the business environment. Major epochs are traced from the “Great Person” theory, through models derived from behaviorism and humanism, to contingency theories based on person-environment interaction, leading up to modern preoccupations with change and transformational leadership. It concludes with a speculative look to the future, where leadership may be viewed as a social process in which several individuals participate.
