Kaplan, R.E. & Kaiser, R.B. (2004). The turbulence within: How sensitivities throw off performance in executives. In R.J. Burke and C.L. Cooper (Eds.) Leading in Turbulent Times, (Ch. 2, pp. 31-53). Oxford: Blackwell.
How leaders deal with the turbulence in the outside world is in part a function of how they deal with the turbulence within--within themselves as individuals. This chapter provides a practical psychology of leadership by linking current performance problems to psychological wounds from the past that sensitize executives to fear failing in some way. We show how these fears, in turn, throw off performance. A model is presented that explains the dynamic. Practical steps for intervening are also illustrated.
