Unconventional Thinking About Leadership
Kaiser, R.B. (2008, April). Unconventional Thinking About Leadership. Panel discussion presented at the annual conference of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology in San Francisco, CA.
A central tenant to the study of leadership is the idea that leaders motivate followers to commit to their organizations and work hard toward its goals. We fully agree that leadership is important to organizational effectiveness, but there may be more to the story. This session will challenge conventional wisdom and question how much leaders really do inspire followers, evaluate whether bad leadership degrades performance more than good leadership enhances it, and consider whether leaders effect organizational performance more through the interpersonal influence of people or through impersonal organizational decisions about strategy, structure, staffing, and operations.
