Developing Versatile Leadership
Kaplan, R.E. & Kaiser, R.B. (2004, May). Developing Versatile Leadership: A Two-sided Model and Cutting-edge Tool. Presented at the International Conference and Exposition hosted by the American Society for Training and Development, Washington, DC.
This workshop provides an introduction to an innovation in leadership models and assessment tools. It describes how modern approaches to assessment don’t capture overdoing — our linear Liker-type rating scales assume that “more is better” even though many performance problems stem from “too much.” Further, modern assessments don’t reflect versatility or balance — because they don’t pick up when leaders do too much of one thing and too little of another. We present solutions for redressing these oversights along with data supporting their usefulness. We also demonstrate how to apply these solutions in existing performance management systems.
